Description
VITTORIO SELLA. Details of the Aletsch Glacier, at the Marjelen Lake, towards the Eggischhorn, c. 1879-1892, Sella number AIX 190. 16.6x22.4 collodion print, printed c. 1893, flush mounted on thin board, mounted on 18x24" heavy gray board. Inscribed in ink on mount recto: Alps / Details of the Aletsch Glacier, at the / 190 / Marjelen Lake, towards Eggischhorn / AIX. Print recto embossed with artist's credit stamp in bottom right corner. Inscribed in ink on mount verso: Alps / Maejelen [crossed out] / Maerjelen Lake; inscribed in blue pencil: 190/AIX.

His most celebrated works are large, multi-plate panoramas. Sella adhered to the idea that each panel of a panorama must itself be a complete and beautiful composition. The Aletsch Glacier or Great Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km (14 mi) (2014), has about a volume of 15.4 km3 (3.7 cu mi) (2011) and covers about 81.7 km2 (31.5 square miles) (2011) in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Aletsch Glacier is composed of four smaller glaciers converging at Concordia Place.

Marjelensee is a lake in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It formed on the eastern side of the Aletsch Glacier in the 19th century.
