HIMALAYAS Siniolchum 1899 Sublime

Lot 2199 Details

Description
VITTORIO SELLA. Siniolchum (Telephotograph) The La, 1899, Sella number HS 72. 7.2x9.3" collodion print, printed 1901, mounted on 10x12" heavy brown board. Embossed with Vittorio Sella stamp in lower right of print. Inscribed in black ink mount recto: Siniolchum from near The La (Telephotograph). Inscribed in pencil mount verso: 72 / HS 72.

Like Timothy O'Sullivan in the King Survey in the Green Valley, Sella photographed various views around the peaks of Siniolchu and Kangchenjunga.

Before Ansel Adams was born, Vittorio Sella was celebrating the sublime emotive aspects of grand landscape photography. Here Sella photographs the mount that the expedition planned to circumnavigate and potentially climb some peaks. Heavy rains prevented the climb of the high peaks.

"For my own generation I am not afraid to use the word. But others will come, and, standing on our shoulders, will boast, as men did in Homer's day, that they are much better than their fathers. Who can tell? The story of the Alps and Caucasus seems to show that every virgin peak must sooner or later meet with its conqueror. From the saddle between Simvu and Siniolchum - on which but for that inexpressibly inopportune snowstorm I might already have been standing - some slope or rib may be revealed by which a more fortunate mountaineer will one day attain to the last surge of the fantastic snowy eave that hangs over those shining cliffs. Let him be careful to treat that snow with due respect, or in more senses than one he may enjoy a Pisgah view." p 126. Round Kangchenjunga: A Narrative of Mountain Travel and Exploration, by Douglas Freshfield, London, Edward Arnold 1903.
