Description
117-138 AD. Alexandria mint. Obv: AVT KAI [TPAI A?PIA C?B] legend with laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. Rev: emperor standing left, sacrificing from patera over altar and holding sceptre; LI - E across fields. RPC III 5784; BMC 858? 12.46 grams. ("). Hadrian unified and consolidated the Roman empire, which by the 2nd century AD was vast in scale. His father died when he was just ten years old, at which point Hadrian entered the household of the future emperor Trajan. He led a military career and was governor of the province of Syria at the time of emperor Trajan's death, upon which Trajan's wife, Pompeia Plotina, announced that it had been the deceased emperor's wish that Hadrian be adopted as his heir. The army supported Hadrian and the Senate ratified what was a naked but clever coup. Hadrian's coinage represents the diversity of the Empire's provinces during his reign.
