Folk Art painting, U.S. military officer, 19th c., W. J. Boote Houseal (American, 1800-?), Portrait of Colonel W. R. Boote, U.S. Army, graphite and watercolor on paper, signed lower right, depicting mounted officer with fort and battle in background, 7"h x 4.5"w (sight), 10"h x 7.375"w (frame)

Provenance: A Private Collection: 510 Park Avenue, New York

Notes/Literature: William R. Boote was born in London in 1776 and emigrated to the U.S.; after joining the Army, rhe ose in the ranks, signing treaties with the Chickasaw tribe in 1801 and the Creeks in 1802, and in 1807 was responsible for taking custody of Aaron Burr and transporting him to his trial for treason
