40170: Apollo 15 Flown Vatican City Flag Directly from

Lot 40170 View Catalog

Apollo 15 Flown Vatican City Flag Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot Al Worden, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A 6.125" x 4.125" cloth Vatican flag that flew to the moon aboard Apollo 15 with crewmembers Dave Scott, Al Worden, and Jim Irwin in 1971. This flag design was adopted in 1929, the year Pope Pius XI signed a treaty with Italy establishing the new independent state. It consists of two vertical bands: the hoist side is yellow, the fly side is white with the crossed keys of Saint Peter and the Papal Tiara centered. Worden has signed across the bottom: "Flown to the Moon on Apollo 15 Al Worden CMP". There is an Apollo 11 flown Vatican flag on display in the Vatican Museums; this would look great on display in your collection. This is the first space-flown Vatican flag Heritage has had the privilege to offer. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Al Worden" on his letterhead, stating (in part): "I hereby certify that this flag from Vatican City included with this letter went to the moon aboard Apollo 15 in the spacecraft 'ENDEAVOUR' . It remained in the command module during the lunar orbit phase of the flight."
