Description
United States of America, after John Melish, 1829. This influential original engraved early map of the United States has an interesting connection with the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819, which helped establish the nation's boundary with New Spain. The map is an updated version of Melish's 1816 map, engraved by Tanner, which Spanish and U.S. diplomats had used in their negotiations. This 1820 version was widely distributed and reprinted several times before 1822. The greater part of the vast Louisiana Territory is here hand-colored green and labeled "Missouri Territory." Three other large areas show unusual boundaries: the "North West Territory," in orange, comprises all or parts of present Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota; "Arkansaw Territory," colored pink, includes present Oklahoma without the panhandle; and Texas. The latter is not clearly labeled as Spanish territory and extends into the Rocky Mountains of present Colorado, but does not include the trans-Pecos area of present far-west Texas. In general, the eastern borders of Texas are outlined with gold or pale orange, but its western borders are in green. A double chain of mountains runs through north central Texas and, as in many early maps, the rivers still run southward instead of southeasterly. "Galvezton" appears on the west bank of the "Rio de Nieves or Neches." Despite these inaccuracies, the Sabine River boundary is well drawn, reflecting the fact that Melish studied the surveys conducted there by William Derby. Unfortunately, Melish's widely distributed map poorly defined the eastern border of the Texas panhandle, leading to much confusion and litigation in later years. 17-1/2 x 22 in.
