Lot 0196 Details

Description
A Chinese blue and white square vase depicting the story of the Battle of Red Cliffs dating from the Kangxi period with a wooden stand. Two sides of the vase each have two seals and long inscriptions telling the story of the battle. The other two sides of the vase have river landscape scenes with military figures in boats. Floral and bamboo motifs decorate the shoulder and neck of the vase. The bottom has a 6-character Kangxi mark.

Dimensions are: 20 3/4 inches tall X 6 1/8 inches wide, 52.7 cm X 15.6 cm. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: The bottom of the vase is drilled and has several cracks. There is a small crack to one corner and a glaze chip to another corner. There is a large glaze defect on the shoulder.

Provenance: From a private New York City collection. Similar examples are housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City under accession number 2015.784.1 as well as at the Palace Museum in Beijing. A similar example was sold at Christie's London on November 5, 2012, as lot 224.
