Description
19th C. die struck medal of American Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones. Obverse features a bust view of Jones facing right, based on the sculpture during his lifetime by Antoine Houdon, with Latin legend surrounding "Joanni Paulo Jones Classis Praefecto/Comitia Americana" (The American Congress to John Paul Jones, Commander of the Fleet). Reverse features a relief of Jones' ship "Bonhomme Richard" alongside the British Frigate "Serapis" with the Latin legend "Hostium Navibus Captis Aut Fugatis" and "Ad Oram Scotiae XXIII Sept. MDCCLXXVIIII" (The Enemy Fleet captured or put to flight/ off Scotland's shore--23 Sept. 1779). The original medal, designed by Augustin Dupre, was struck in gold and presented to John Paul Jones.
