Hand-colored Talbotype . A well dressed boy by Williams

Lot 0002 Details

Description
 Talbotype of a boy in a decorative dress by James W. Williams. The hand-colored photograph is 7 1/2 x 5 ¾ inches in a fancy oval gilt frame 13 x 11 ½ inches.

The wooden back of the frame can be opened to reveal a large label with interesting information. It advertises Talbotypes from Daguerreotypes” by William, and proclaims the advantages of Talbotypes over daguerreotypes.

A daguerreotype is photographed and a print is made that is then hand colored. In this case the artist is presumably Williams. A later label applied to the top indicates the daguerreotype was made by the great Philadelphia firm of McClees and Germon. That studio also made colored Talbotypes. One of their labels is illustrated in David R. Hanson ‘Illiminating Shadows. The Calotype in Nineteenth Century America” p. 170.

The boy wears a fancy jacket with the ends of a frilly shirt sleeve visible above his hands. His fancy hat is on a cloth-covered table and a cloth of the same material as the jacket is draped over it, probably a shawl. The decorative elements of the frame are intact.
