Gertrude Käsebier. Her daughter and future husband

Lot 0019 Details

Description
6 5/8 x 4 7/8 inch toned gelatin silver print, on a black mount, ca. 1895.

Her daughter, also named Gertrude, is shown in a loving mutual gaze with her future husband Charles O’Malley. Mothers and children were important subjects of her photographs. One of her children continued her photography business after her death. The love between the couple is in contrast with Gertrude’s own unhappy marriage.

This has her blind stamp on the bottom, verso, with an inscription in an unknown hand, giving her daughter’s maiden name. This must have been written soon after the wedding. It is an intimate family photograph rather than for public show, but still has her blind stamp. Provenance: George Rinhart to the consignor through a dealer.
