Early Black military scholar on Haiti?s Revolution

Lot 0012 Details

Description
Heading: (African American, Haiti)
Author: Steward, T.G.
Title: The Haitian Revolution / 1791 to 1804 / Or Side Lights on the French Revolution
Place Published: New York
Publisher:Thomas Y. Crowell Co.
Date Published: c. 1914.
Description:

292 pp. Illustrated. Original cloth binding. First Edition.

Theophilus Gould Steward was the son of free Blacks in New Jersey and an ordained Minister of the A.M.E. Church. He ministered to congregations in Reconstruction Georgia and later in Haiti, as well as a Wilberforce University Doctor of Divinity.

Joining the US Colored Infantry as an Army Chaplain in Buffalo Soldier days, he saw active service in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, and helped found the American Negro Academy, the first major society of African-American scholarship. During two decades as Professor of History at Wilbeforce until his death in 1924, he wrote this now-classic history of the "fierce and bloody" revolt of Haiti's Blacks against European colonial domination, which, he argued, was unique among the revolutions of that day because of the "prodigious social cataclysm with which it was accompanied."
