Stephen Ferrell, Edgefield Stoneware Face Jug
Item Details
Description
Stephen Ferrell, Edgefield, South Carolina; southern stoneware face jug, stamped below handle with maker's mark and "FERRELL", base signed "3/9 / 1st Wood, Fired / Ferrell Pots / May 2002 SF / Hambidge Center / GA"; 9"H; good condition, firing cracks as made--- We have learned the following information regarding this piece from a local long-time collector of Ferrell and Edgefield pottery . . . "Highly acclaimed North Carolina potter, Sid Luck, was annually firing the wood kiln at Hambidge Folk Art Center in Georgia c. 1900. Steve Ferrell had never fired in wood. The collector made a deal whereby he made a contribution of $400 to Hambidge, and Mr. Luck allowed Steve to put 10 pieces in the firing. This is one of those ten pieces. As far as the collector knows, Steve did not fire in wood again until the Goldberg kiln was constructed in Edgefield c. 2010 . . . and then very few pieces." (Ref. 114-1)
