Romano-Celtic, late Imperial Period, ca. 5th century CE. A marvelous hand-carved limestone corbel presenting a projecting head peering outwards. A lovely veil falls from the flat-topped headdress, cascading down the sides of the face and held in place by a slender, braided headband. Looking slightly to their right, the ovoid visage is framed by a short coiffure, while a thick collar or necklace rests below. Size: 5" L x 6.75" W x 6.25" H (12.7 cm x 17.1 cm x 15.9 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-Connell collection, Massachusetts, USA

Fragment of a larger piece. Softening of detail throughout and loss of detail on face. Nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits and encrustations.
