Description
Chinese 18th Century Yellow Jade Snuff Bottle carved to one side using the stone's russet skin & inclusions with a scene of Immortals in Clouds Pouring a container of Water to call up a Dragon; fine polished oval foot ring, the mouth covered with a silver cover to an inserted silver tube marked "MAQUET" for Maison Maquet showing that it was converted in the 19th Century into a spirit lighter with a silver striker attached to another cover. The cover now is an antique cabochon Peking Glass bead in imitation of Jadeite with a small bead finial. Height with cover 3 inches (7.5 cm.). NOTE: The Maquet brothers, Hector and Charles, established Maison Maquet in 1841 to sell their luxury Designs often incorporating antiques. Maison Maquet became official supplier to Empress Eugenie and to numerous international royal customers, winning many awards and medals for their fine designs. Converting antique Chinese Snuff Bottles to spirit lighters was a speciality. PROVENANCE: From a private Long Island, NY collection
