Ancient Greek Fragmented Terracotta Relief

Lot 0006 Details

Description
Ancient Greek fragmented terracotta relief, circa 6th century B.C., polychromed and molded with a figure of a griffin striding to the right and followed by a man on horseback, raised on Lucite base. Terracotta: 11.5" H x 17" W; overall with stand: 14" H. Note: Slabs equal in size and depicting similar motifs served as metope pattern in a frieze decorating building facades. They were nailed through the wall through the perforation on the face. Stylistically, the slabs show similarities with oriental art of the Greek. Removed from a 936 5th Avenue estate.
