Lot 0002 Details

Description
Zhenshiny, idite v kooperatsiyu [Women, Join the Cooperatives], a poster by Ignaty Nivinsky (1881-1933). Published by VTsSPO, Moscow, 1918, 66 x 59 cm.

Our last sale included a better-known Nivinsky poster with the same caption, also produced for VTsPO (lot 7), and also signed in the plate “I.N.”. Barring the unlikely possibility of VTsPO simultaneously employing two different artists who shared the same initials, and used them to sign their work, one must attribute this poster to Nivinsky as well. The poster shown must predate its better-known counterpart, as it still uses the pre-Revolutionary orthography. In the later poster, Nivinsky already uses simplified post-1917 spellings.

An important Symbolist artist, Nivinsky was particularly interested in printmaking (he founded the Union of Engravers in 1918), but he also worked in other graphic genres, including poster production. Nivinsky had also gained much acclaim as an interior decorator of public buildings (including Lenin's Mausoleum, 1929-1930), and as a stage designer.

Before the Revolution, the All-Russian Union of Consumer Cooperatives (VTsPO; also known as Tsentrosoyuz) functioned as a voluntary trade association. Once the Bolsheviks took control, they quickly converted it into a governmental organization, and membership of individual cooperatives in VTsPO became mandatory. Through the first post-revolutionary decade, the cooperative movement was actively supported by the State as an alternative to private enterprise.
