A wonderful gold presentation cane to Captain Putnam. The large solid gold handle, professionally tested below the skin to be at least 14k and weigh just under 28 grams, is 1 7/8" high, and 1 1/4" across the top. It is inscribed: " T.H. Allen to Capt. W.E. Putnam". The smooth sides are unmarked, and it is fashioned octagonally. The shaft is full-bark malacca with a 1 1/3" burnished brass ferrule. The overall length is 34 1/4" and the condition is very good. It is perhaps American, ca 1855. A cursory attempt to research Allen and Putnam has not produced definitive results but this superb piece deserves further investigation. It is a great example. Estimate: $2500-$3500.
