C 1822 Theorem on Velvet Lititz Moravian School

Lot 0071 Details

Description
Watercolor on velvet theorem, ca. 1822, having central motif of mixed fruits in basket resting on three rows of leaves, attributed to Mary Ann Doll (1812-1860) while a student at the Lititz Moravian School for Girls (now Linden Hall School for Girls), housed in later painted Victorian frame, 20-1/2" x 17". Slight browning and foxing to edges but strong bright colors, 10" vertical fabric pull to top center. School archives show Mary Ann Doll enrolled in 1822. The basket and base, while unique to this piece, are characteristic of the work taught to the young girls attending the school. Approx. six other examples of Lititz Moravian Girls School theorems are known to exist. See "The Ornamental Branches" (Heritage Center of Lancaster County, Inc.) by Patricia T. Herr for related examples.
