80978: 1979 Philadelphia Phillies Beat Chicago Cubs 23-

Lot 80978 View Catalog

1979 Philadelphia Phillies Beat Chicago Cubs 23-22 Game Used Baseball. It was a grim top of the first at Wrigley, as the Cubs watched seven Phillies cross home plate. But then, miraculously, the home team answered with six in the bottom half of the inning. We have a game again! But then, in the top of the third, it got even worse. Eight more Phillies runs. Another two in the top of the fourth made it seventeen to six. The Cubs answered with three, only to give up four more in the next half inning. Now it was twenty-one to nine. But the Cubs would score ten in their next two innings to make it a two-run game. One more run for the visitors and three more for the Cubs brought it to a stunningly improbable twenty-two run tie at the close of nine innings. Hall of Fame slugger Mike Schmidt's tenth inning solo homer would prove the game winner, sending an exhausted Wrigley fan base home dejected.

Presented is a weary veteran of that ERA-annihilating contest. It was saved by Phillies general manager Paul Owens, who penned the details artfully on the sweet spot of the ONL (Feeney) orb: "Thursday May 17, 1979, Phillies at Chicago, Phils 23, Cubs 22." Letter of provenance from Owens' son is included. Letter of provenance from son of Phillies GM.
