Bukowski's 1st book inscribed to Loujon

Lot 0438 Details

Description
Heading:
Author: Bukowski, Charles
Title: Flower, Fist and Bestial Wail - inscribed to Jon and Gypsy Lou Webb
Place Published: [Eureka, CA]
Publisher:Hearse Press
Date Published: 1960
Description:

[28] pp. (8vo) original pictorial saddle stitched white paper wrappers, front cover with fist flower illustration in black, lettered in red. One of only 200 copies published, in November 1960 by E.V. Griffith. First Edition.

Bukowski’s rare first book, twice signed and inscribed to Jon and Louise Webb of Loujon Press. The earlier inscription is on the title page, along with a drawing of a flower: "There have been more flowers since this one, this fist too, and I suppose we have wailed some years away together since the first book and this time now - 9-18-63, Charles Bukowski." The second inscription is on the inner front wrapper: "And again 3-9-65 1109 Rue Royale - 9 p.m. For Jon and Lou, perhaps this last book, Crucifix - and the talent is the heart of your guts. Love, Buk." This second inscription must have been done while Bukowski was in New Orleans signing copies of Crucifix in a Deathand, his second book published by Loujon Press. The address is the Webb's apartment on Royal Street and the paint used for the inscription is similar to that used by Bukowski to sign some copies of Crucifix. Surely one of the most desirable association copies of Bukowski's rare first book. One of Al Fogel's top 20 Bukowski rarities. Krumhansl 3.

Condition
Mild wear and a bit of toning to wrapper edges, tiny bump to bottom of spine; else near fine. Staples not oxidized, as usually found.
