Mustache, vol.I from The Works of Charles Paul De Kock, 1905
The Bibliomania Ltd Edition of 250 by The Frederick J. Quinby Co. 1905, Boston, London, Paris.
Illustrations by William Sherman Potts: the original aquarelle, the watercolor, two original etchings, three photogravures and three reproduced ink drawings.
The Boston publishing firm Frederick J. Quinby Co. hired W.S. Potts, John F. Sloan and other Ashcan School artists to illustrate limited Deluxe edition of de Kock novels. A single set of 100 volumes was $50,000, a huge sum at the turn of the century.
Hand-drawn illustrations, etchings signed by the artist, half morocco leather Art Nouveau binding with gilt titles and top edge, tall gilt raised bands, fine floral tooling and vellum pages.
Watermarked edition number and publisher signature. 8vo, 9.25” x 6.5”
Charles de Kock (French, 1793 – 1871): A popular novelist of the 19th century.
William Sherman Potts (American, 1876-1927): A portrait painter and illustrator for Good Housekeeping Magazine, lived in New York and Noank, CT. Yale graduate 1895, joined Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Academie Julian, Paris. In the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
