Though the second shuttle built, Columbia was the first to fly, launching on April 12, 1981, the twentieth anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first manned space flight in Vostok 1. It accomplished the first five missions of the program and six of the first nine, but was tragically destroyed during re-entry of its twenty-eighth mission, causing the loss of all seven members of the STS-107 crew in 2003. During its years of service, it flew 125 million miles, orbited the earth 4800 times, and spent a total of 300 days in space.
