19th C. American Powder Horn & Leather Possibles Bag
Item Details
Description
North America, United States, ca. early to late 19th century CE. A leather possibles bag and a wood and cow powderhorn. The leather bag is formed by several panels of cow skin or deer leather sewn into a simple pouch with a cover flap. On the verso is a cotton strap for suspension that is a later addition to the bag. Leather pouches used by frontiers men were known as possibles bags, to carry all the gear they would possibly need - which was usually not much more than a few lightweight possessions! This pouch still holds a length of vegetal fibers to use as tinder. The powderhorn has a wooden cap at one end and wooden plug; the horn still contains some gunpowder. Leather cords are tied around the neck and cap for suspension. Size of powderhorn: 10.25" L x 2.25" W (26 cm x 5.7 cm); possibles bag: 6.5" L x 7" W (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
