Japanese shin-shinto katana (long sword), nagasa (length of blade) 26.5in/67.1cm; signed Suo Iwakuni-ju Seiryuken Morotoshi kore [o] tsukuru on the omote, and dated Genji gannen hachigatsu hi (1864.8) on the ura; sugata (configuration): shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune, torii-zori, o-kissaki; kitae (forging pattern): itame-hada; -hamon (tempering pattern): gunome-midare, niedeki; -boshi (tip): ko-maru hakikake; -nakago (tang): single hole, katte sagari, ha-agari kurijiri. Koshirae [mounting/fittings] -a black ishime saya (scabbards); assembled plain iron fuchi and patinated (shakudo?) copper kashira with a stylized wave pattern; an iron tsuba of squared oval shape decorated with a praying mantis amid reeds repeated on the reverse and picked out with gold accents; a pair of gold and shakudo menuki of foliate form partially obscured by the hilt's plaited leather tsukaito; and a plain silver-foil wrapped copper habaki.
