Item Details
Description
EDWARD S. CURTIS. Plate 541 Washo Baskets, 1924. 11.2x15.3" photogravure on 13.2x16.7" Tissue, cornered on 16.5x21" modern Rives BFK heavy paper with original 18x22" Holland Van Gelder overmat. Print date 1926. From Portfolio 15, Indians of Southern California and Nevada, of The North American Indian. Printed on plate recto: Plate 541/ Washo Baskets /From Copyright Photograph 1924 by E.S. Curtis/Photogravure Suffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass.

Datsolali is considered the greatest basket maker. Curtis wrote about her: "The coiled baskets produced by this woman have not been equaled by any Indian now living. Compare her work, shown in Plate 541, with the baskets of another woman as illustrated in Plate 542. The latter, seen alone, would be considered very excellent examples of Indian basketry but their comparative coarseness is easily seen even in photographic reproduction. About ninety years old, Datsolali appears to be in the early sixties. She has the pride of a master in his craft, and a goodly endowment of artistic temperament. Persuading her to sit for a portrait is a task not to be lightly undertaken. Tasolali (said to mean "big hips") is a nickname. Her proper name is Tabuta."
