Item Details
Description
EDWARD S. CURTIS. Plate 613 A Zuni Girl, 1903. 15.5x11.5" photogravure on 22x18" Japan Vellum paper. From Portfolio 17, Pueblo Indians, of The North American Indian. Printed on print recto: Plate 613 / A Zuni Girl / From Copyright Photograph 1903 by E.S. Curtis / Photogravure Suffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass. Inscribed in pencil on print verso: CCI 7487.

Curtis admired the Indigenous crafts, and many photographs that might be considered fashion style photographs of the time of men or women, boys and girls posing in their finest hand-crafted traditional outfits. Pictorial photographers at that time, like Edward Steichen, made soft focus views of socialites in the finest clothes. Similarly, Curtis made still life arrangements of baskets, pottery, hand tinted views of beaded shirts, moccasins and such like the painters of his time, and like the product photographers in 20th century commercial photography. He had a studio style set he used in the field to control the lighting. He was also a wizard at staging these views outdoors.
