Assessment
Steinway L #176483, made in 1916. Satin black lacquer finish.
Case: fair condition for its age with age-appropriate scratches and dings.

Bench: CPS Imports padded bench with storage included

Trapwork (pedal system): firmly attached, only partially functional. Middle pedal non-functional. Una Corda pedal (left pedal) requires adjustment to operate properly. Sustain pedal (right) properly set.

Pedal lyre has some cosmetic damage, possibly chewed by a dog.

Action: verdigris-stiffened hammer flanges throughout the piano. Hammers are too sluggish to allow for normal play. The hammers and hammer shanks require replacement.

Damper felts have been replaced and adjusted and are in good condition.

Impossible to judge the "Tough Weight" (the weight of the keys) of the piano with currently compromised hammer flanges, which add significantly to the down weight.

Original soundboard and bridges. Minor cracks in treble bridge. Soundboard is in poor condition, with multiple cracks in the soundboard and evidence of ribs separating from the soundboard. These have been previously repaired, but non-professionally. The soundboard would likely require replacement in the near future, though the piano will play as it is without such repairs.

Keys: ivory keys have been professionally replaced previously with good-quality plastic keytops and are in good condition. Key brushings have been replaced as well and the keys have been leveled correctly. The wippens are original and functional but should be replaced when the rest of the piano is restored.

Pitch and tone: good tone, resonant through all registers, even with the less-than-perfect soundboard repair. The piano was found less than 4% flat and could be brought back to a stable A440 pitch with a single tuning (three weeks after it has settled into its new home). Healthy pianos go about 5% flat annually.
