Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Tamegroute (Tamgrout), Berber culture, ca. 19th century CE. This is a beautiful wheel-thrown pottery bowl that is glazed the characteristic green-yellow hue that the village of Tamegroute is renowned for. The dish presents a conical body and thick walls upon a pedestal foot, the broad shoulders rise upward and are incised with a wavy linear motif below the thick rim that is decorated with raised nodules. At the sides are two handles, and the interior rim has a small lip that suggests this may have been a lidded vessel. The interior basin, exterior rim, and midsection are all coated with glazing, while the base and foot reveal the brown stoneware surface. When fired, the pottery pieces are stacked inside each other - the pitting and scars throughout occur during the firing and when the pieces are taken out of the oven. The green results from the copper and magnesium in the clay and glaze, a special recipe that has been used by Berber artisans for generations and has yet to be perfectly replicated outside of Tamegroute. Size: 10.5" W x 5.3" H (26.7 cm x 13.5 cm)
