Description
A FAMILLE ROSE 'HUNDRED BOYS' PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY
China, 18th - 19th century. Masterfully painted in bright polychrome enamels and iron red on a white ground with a continuous scene of the 'hundred boys' depicted holding lanterns and long staves supporting a dragon, with further boys standing in front of a pagoda. The recessed base with an iron red four-character Qianlong seal mark.

Provenance
: From the private collection of Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter. Tuyet Nguyet was the founder and chief editor of Arts of Asia. She married Stephen Markbreiter, an English architect, in 1959 and moved to Hong Kong to work as a journalist. Arts of Asia's first regular edition appeared in 1971. In the magazine, Nguyet sought to combine authoritative content from major experts with detailed coverage of the Asian art market. Tuyet Nguyet was an early member of The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, attending her first convention in 1973, and was later elected as an honorary member.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, primarily to gliding.

Stopper: Coral with dragon decoration, hardstone collar
Weight: 30.5 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 77 mm. Diameter neck 13 mm and mouth 8 mm.

Of flattened pear-shaped form with gilded rims to the foot and mouth.

The subject of boys or of children was very popular on decorative arts of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Traditionally, they represent the wish for abundant offspring, or in particular, sons, and wealth.
