Description
(Disney, 1932) An exceptionally rare original hand-drawn Mickey Mouse comic strip by Floyd Gottfredson. The very first Mickey Mouse comic strip debuted on January 13, 1930. Walt Disney himself wrote the earliest strips and animator Ub Iwerks provided the illustrations. Soon after, Walt turned to Gottfredson, one of his Studio animation "in-betweeners," to helm the comic strip project. Gottfredson would go on to draw Mickey Mouse comic strips for 45 years. In this original strip, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse attempt to escape a mutiny aboard the "Good Ship Potluck," during part of the "Treasure Island" serial that was originally published from May 16 to November 11, 1932. The artwork has been hand-drawn by Gottfredson, with the story attributed to Webb Smith. The strip bears the early "Walter E. Disney Enterprises" copyright notation applied in the lower-left corner, and an ink "Walt Disney" signature which is also attributed to Gottfredson as part of the strip artwork. The piece has a 6"x27" mat opening within its 12"x32.75" wooden frame. The framed artwork is in very fine condition, exhibiting a few smudges and small spots of discoloration. Any example of Mickey Mouse comic strip art is exceptionally rare, however such an early strip as this, featuring both Mickey and Minnie, is near impossible to find.
