Tony Da (1940-2008) - Incised Bear with Turquoise, Arrowhead, and Heishi c. 1970s, Condition: This pottery is in near excellent condition. The black arrowhead had been broken in half and re-glued, and is barely noticeable. The rest of the bear is in excellent condition. Provenance: Acquired from Frances Hamilton White Collection (1933-2021). Frances Hamilton White was known for her exquisite taste in Native American Art and spent a lifetime carefully curating, adding only the best examples to her collection. Her extensive painting collection was recently sold at Christie's. Description: Tony Da, was the grandson of Maria and Julian Martinez, and the son of Popovi Da. All were talented potters and masters in the art of watercolors. Popovi Da, Tony's Da's, father was born Anthony Martinez in 1922; his Tewa name was Popvi Da, which he legally changed in 1948. Tony Da's artistic career was cut short in 1982 at age 42 due to a motorcycle accident which left him unable to make pottery. His pottery has been featured in numerous museum shows and a comprehensive book "Life and Art of Tony Da." Tony made approximately 450 pots. His work is hard to find and very collectable.
