Description
Important Aleut closed-crown chief hunting hat, Late 18th/early 19th c., Aleutian Islands, Alaska, bentwood, walrus bone, glass trade beads, fiber, sea lion whiskers, pigment, the beak form helmet was worn at sea during whale hunting, the surface decorated with red and blue parallel line decoration, a carved volute on the reverse holds a plumage of long sea whiskers, old French handwritten label to helmet interior reads "Chapeau d'un natural-Detroit de Behring", approx. 8"h x 14"l x 7"w (not including whiskers)

Provenance: Property from the Collection of the Wright Art Trust; Acquired thru J.J. Klejman, NYC, March 1969; 19th c. French Collection indicated by interior label
