Preston Monongye (Native American, 1927-1987) Kachina Panel. Engraved metal mounted on wood. Measures 12.5 x 6". A kachina is a spirit being in the religious beliefs of Native American cultures located in the south-western part of the United States, originating with the Hopi. This art depicts a "Yei" (Spirit deity of the Navajo), with corn (is one of four sacred plants of the Navajo) predominately on his body. Preston Monongye was a leader in the “The New Indian Jewelry” movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Item ships from Corona Del Mar, Ca.
