Established in 1930 to promote medallic arts, The Society of Medalists immediately commissioned a series of medals to be fashioned by prominent sculptors. The series provided collectors two annual entries from 1930 through 1995. The total of more than 130 medals over seven decades creates an artistic tapestry of the currents of thought, mythology, religion, philosophy, the sciences, art, literature, world cultures, nature, and current events throughout the decades. A full listing of the medals, their year of commission, and their creators, can be found at: http://www.medalcollectors.org/Guides/SoM/SOM.html The Society produced these medals originally in bronze and then later, and retroactively, in silver. Actual demand for the silver medals fell short of that which the society anticipated, rendering the marking of '700' found on the edge of each medal inaccurate -- and the medals even more rare. Our collection represents the bulk of the entire silver series. Issue #2 honors mythology's Dionysus (Bacchus) and the Satyrs, treading grapes. One of the two issues released in 1930, the first year of the Society's series, this medal was crafted by Paul Manship from 7.125 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Mintage is believed to be 50.
