Item Details
Description
Art Deco cinnabar, black, and eggshell-lacquered vase, in the manner of Jean Dunand (French, 1877 - 1942), the tall ovoid body in turned wood lacquered with overlapping cinnabar and black lacquer triangles against an eggshell lacquered black ground. 19.75" H x 8" diameter (widest) Note: In 1900, Japanese artist Seizo Sugawara set up a workshop in Paris after the Exposition Universelle to showcase Japan’s superiority in eggshell lacquer technique. Sugawara met French metalsmith, Jean Dunand; through their exchange of technique, Dunand became one of the most influential artisans of the Art Deco era. His eggshell pieces over nickel silver became justly famous inspiring other artists to attempt the same technique. The offered lot is related to several works by Dunand, especially a pair of ovoid vases from 1925, illustrated in Marcilhac, F., Jean Dunand: His Life and Works, New York: Abrams, 1991, fig. 1047, p. 311.
