pencil signed, image area 18" x 23"....Joanie Arvin was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended the Central Academy of Art in Cincinnati and studied architectural drawing at the University of Cincinnati. She later graduated with a minor in art from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and continued her education by studying Chinese Brush Painting from Ning Yeh and oil painting from Steve Missal through the community college continuing education program at Maricopa Community Colleges in Phoenix Arizona. She has been employed as an artist by a number of corporations. She was a reproductive artist for Gibson Greeting Card Company, was a technical illustrator with General Electric, an illustrator with Advanced Advertising Agency, a staff artist with the University of Cincinnati Alumnus Magazine, and art director for the New Products Division of Mead Paper Company. Joanie relocated to Phoenix, Arizona in 1969. Although she had been showing her work since 1953 and had worked in several professional environments, she decided in 1984 to open her own studio gallery. Many of her original works can be found in homes across the nation from New York to Hawaii. Joanie has worked in several mediums: oil on canvas, watercolor, Chinese water brush, pastels, but she brings her “mastery to pen and ink. The medium demands discipline. Black and white pen and ink makes a bold, direct, detailed and powerful statement. Joanie Arvin’s art lives in simple lines and spaces. Using only pen and ink she shapes familiar objects so your eye sees the ‘known’ in a new way. True texture arises from the strokes and spaces. Simplicity defines the intricacy of her work.
