Item Details
Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A lovely pottery bowl known as a mokhfia, presenting a rounded bottom and thick walls that rise to a flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Adorned in hues of blue, saffron yellow, teal, and an indigo purple, the interior basin presents a geometric and abstract foliate pattern, with an 8-pointed star, rosettes, and repeating scrolling and foliate motifs. The broad rim is painted with a stippled and linear vine pattern bordered by a thick band of teal, while the exterior walls are plain with just the white slip glaze. The ring foot is pierced in two places so that when not in use this boldly patterned bowl would be hung on a wall - doubling as both serving dish and art. Size: 12" Diameter x 3.75" H (30.5 cm x 9.5 cm)
