A rare Maling figure, by Norman Carling, modelled as a mermaid, rising from the waves, printed mark 'Maling/Made in England'27cm long Note; Norman Carling (1902-1971) was a skilled modeller who brought a new three-dimensional aspect to Maling pottery. He joined Maling in 1935 from A.J. Wilkinson, the firm responsible for Clarice Cliff "Bizarre" wares, and produced a number of quality Art Deco models. Most of his models were produced as a one-off or in very small quantities but none went into full production. This figure of a mermaid is believed to be one of only two still in existence and is reputed to be a depiction of his wife.Literature; Steven Moore and Catherine Ross, 'Maling - The Trade Mark of Excellence' Pub: Tyne & Wear Museums, 3rd Edition revised by S Moore
