"Lotus Leaf Bowl"
sand-cast anodized aluminum
Marked "Lotus Leaf Copyright 1948 Oskar J. W. Hansen Harvin Co. No. 3514." Bowl sits on separate footed base. The Harvin Co. was purchased by Virginia Metalcrafters in the 1950s. Oskar J. W. Hansen lived and worked in Charlottesville, Virginia and was well known for his sand-cast organic bowls. Most of his smaller bowls were cast in brass but his larger lotus bowls were frequently made with anodized aluminum. Some light losses to finish at center of bowl. Hansen was born in Norway and toured the world as a cabin boy before moving to America in 1910. He served in both the U.S. Army and the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. Hansen studied at Port Arthur College and Northeastern University's divinity school before embarking on a career as a sculptor. One of his best known commissions is for a number of massive sculptures at the Hoover Dam, including the monument of dedication. Hansen stated that for him the dam represented "a monument to collective genius exerting itself in community efforts around a common need or ideal."
