Horace Goldin, Submits a Moorish Illusionary Phantasy, The Tiger God, 1920 Half sheet, Moody Brothers, Birmingham, England, linen backed. 29" x 19" A whirling dervish performing illusions in breath taking speed and fury, Goldin also presented elaborate, colorful, dramatic skits that resonated with events reported at the time in newspapers and the popular fiction. Damsels in distress, captured by pirates or desert sheikhs, were a popular theme in films, fiction, and bogus news accounts. Here Goldin presented a fantastic tableau of a young maiden seized and thrown into a cage with a tiger, only to be rescued by the magician at the last possible second by making the tiger disappear.
