The finely executed ebony cabinet of engraved brass, pewter and tortoiseshell inlay set within gilt bronze mounts exhibits a striking balance between première partie and contre partie, the cabinet front with tortoiseshell ground inlaid with pewter and brass, edged with contrasting inlaid band with pewter ground, central gilt bronze frame with pawed foliate legs centering a female mask resting on stepped base with inlaid panels on brass ground, the central door surmounted by a medallion bust relief of Louis XIV inscribed LVDOVICVS MAGNUS REX, draped with gilt bronze garland framing the central door of tortoiseshell ground inlayed with brass and pewter in foliate swirls within an architectural grid, the door reverse with contrasting pewter ground inlaid with tortoiseshell and brass, the door opens to four drawers of ebony framing pewter ground inlaid with engraved brass and tortoiseshell, each side fitted with four drawers with pewter ground inlaid in brass and tortoiseshell within a gilt bronze frame and escutcheon, with a conforming marble top, raised on spiraling toupie feet.
Related examples by André-Charles Boulle are found in two forms; the meuble à hauteur d'appui as well as the cabinet on stand. The example presented here bears similarity to a pair of meuble à hauteur d'appui in the collection of the Louvre.
