A similar spice chest is illustrated in "American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection," vol. VII, Feb., 1961, #376.

In his June 5, 1970 letter to Dr. Deyerle, Benno M. Forman, Research Fellow at Winterhur, states that this is New England and quite rare, and five in all are known (two at Winterhur, one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one at the Art Institute of Chicago and the present example.)
