535. DAVID LIVINGSTONE (1813-1873). Important African explorer and sworn enemy of the slave trade, the medical missionary discovered the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. He is forever immortalized as the recipient of Henry Stanley's query, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" ALS, 4pp with integral leaf, 5"x8", Glasgow, May 26, 1865. To Mr. Young regarding the forwarding of a check. In part, "After writing the note which Mr. Brown will show you I came down to Glasgow and am now writing this in Mr. Nicolson's office. Will [you] take the cheque for £2315...and indorse it for me and then send it over to the broker Mr. Aston. This will save time as I cannot be in London before a fortnight and the money is to be in Mr. Aston's hands before the 29th..." Darkly penned and signed in full.
