Lot 0113 Details

Description
Road to Taos, circa 1917, signed lower left: Birger Sandzen, oil on board, 18'' H x 24'' W, est: $30,000/50,000
Exhibited: Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, CA, ''Colors of the West: The Paintings of Birger Sandzen'', April - September 2010. Note: William H. Gerdts writes in his foreword to the book ''Birger Sandzen: An Illustrated Biography'', ''Birger Sandzen's Western paintings ... share with the work of some of his California contemporaries such qualities as a strong structural sense and a vivid facture of paint and brush stroke, but his work differs from theirs also, notably in the rich, inventive, high-key colorism, a trademark of his mature style (E. Lindquist, ''Birger Sandzen: An Illustrated Biography'', Lawrence, KS, 1993, pp. xii-xiii). The present New Mexican landscape, painted in this mature period, showcases the artist's unique palette and dynamic brushwork.
A photograph from 1917 illustrated in Lindquist's book depicts Sandzen standing before a wall of paintings in his studio, holding his palette and brushes (E. Lindquist, p. 77). The present work is visible in the right center hanging unframed on the artist's studio wall (a copy of the photograph accompanies the lot).
Although Kansas remained the artist's home, Sandzen travelled throughout Colorado, California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico -- both in Santa Fe and Taos -- in search of fresh subjects. ''In 1915, Sandzen traveled to New Mexico....While in Santa Fe, he befriended artists Marsden Hartley, B.J.O. Nordfeldt, and Raymond Jonson and later, in 1922, became an associate member of the Taos Society of Artists, exhibiting with the group (C. Giles et al, Colors of the West: The Paintings of Birger Sandzen'', Palm Springs, CA, 2010, p. 6). An original ''Colors of the West: The Paintings of Birger Sandzen'' exhibition brochure accompanies the lot.
