MapsSeutter’s Large Map of the Americas with California as an Island

c. 1730, NOVUS ORBIS SIVE AMERICA MERIDOIONALIS ET SEPTENTRIONALIS...”, by Matthew Seutter, Augsburg, Very Fine.
19.5” x 22.75” matted, copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline, with two large uncolored pictorial cartouches. 2” fine tear in top right corner. Striking map of North and South America. The title cartouche at the lower left features natives engaged in several peaceful activities, and a few birds. The cartouche at upper left depicts Spanish grandees being served by several natives, with various religious objects present. California is an island off the west coast of North America. This is the fifth state of the map, as noted by McGlaughlin, mostly having to do with the variations in the upper left carouche. He describes the map as having “California as an island based on second Sanson model; also of Homann style, and with many coastal place names. Terra Esonis incogn and FRETUM ANIAN to northwest. Pays de Moozemleck to northeast.” Leighly 165; McLaughlin 211;Tooley 91. Toning and some soiling to the map, minor rubbing and a few spots, worming in the margins and a few tiny worm holes to the map, still very good.
