Description
Zaire Ca 19th to early 20th Century ADFine hard wood carving of a female seated surmounting a staff. She's finely rendered with scarification to torso, small cavity between pointed breasts and with hands to abdomen; her smaller hips and feet blending into the top of the shaft. She also has a five lobed coiffure and symmetrical refined facial features and is adorned with fiber woven skirt.Size: 9-3/4 inches (24.7cm) H. + custom mount.Ex New York Private Collection. Acquired Nov 1976 Endicott-Guthaim Gallery, 946 Madison Ave. Accompany the item is a descriptive letter signed by Alfred L. Scheinberg, a previous owner, who goes further into the collection history; stating it was owned by Dr Jean Bonvin, a professor at the University of Burundi and the piece is published in Pace Gallery’s “African Spirit Images and Identities, 1976 , Leon Soroto no. 155 pg 72..
