Al Hirschfeld (American, 1903-2003). "Caricature of Vartan Gregorian'. 1994. Lithograph. Edition of 50. Signed and numbered. Unframed. Dimensions: 18" x 22". Hirschfeld trained at the Arts Students League and the National Academy of Design in NYC. In 1924, Hirschfeld traveled to Paris and London for further art training. Fabled Broadway press agent Richard Money showed one of Hirschfeld's drawings to an editor at the New York Herald Tribune and his career was launched. His caricatures of celebrities, Broadway stars and politicians appeared in the pages of The NY Tribune, then the Times and many magazines.Hirschfeld's style was unique, regularly drawings of pure line in black ink for which he used a genuine crow quill. His caricatures have influenced countless artists, illustrators and cartoonists. Here is what the artist wrote about this work: "Dr. Gregorian is a man I very much admire, for the wonderful job he did. Even further, he has fun hair to draw. In fact, it looks a little like the manes of those famous lions sitting on the front library steps. Maybe the style goes with the post (President of the NY Public Library)... His eyes do look kind of baggy, but that's undoubtedly from all that reading"Vartan Gregorian (1934-2021) was an Armenian- American academic, educator and historian. He served as President of the Carnegie Corporation fro 1997-2021. Gregorain moved to the US from Iran at age 22. He graduated with a PhD fro Stanford and taught several universities with his specialty being the history of the Muslim world. New Yorkers will remember Vartan as the man who financially stabilized the New York Public Library system and re-vitalized its cultural importance, when he served as its President from 1981-1989. Rhode Islanders will remember Gregorian as Brown University's first foreign-born president (1989-1997), where he was its most prolific fundraiser which allowed the institution to head into a vast growth period. Gregorian'saccomplishments led to dozens of awards and honorary doctorates, including the National Humanities Medal (1998) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2004).
