Leica M4 Christo "Wrapped Leica"

Christo + Jeanne Claude - wer kennt sie nicht? Die spektakulären Installationen des mittlerweile verstorbenen Künstlerpaars sind weltberühmt. Nicht zuletzt die Großprojekte der verhüllten („wrapped“) Kulturdenkmäler Arc de Triumphe in Paris oder Reichstag in Berlin sorgten für weltweites Aufsehen und zogen Millionen begeisterter Besucher an.

Der deutsche Leica Fotograf Wolfgang Volz hat die Christo + Jeanne Claude Projekte offiziell begleitet. In der fast 50-jährigen Zusammenarbeit entstanden nicht nur die fotografischen Dokumentationen der Projekte, sondern wurde die Fotografie deren integraler Bestandteil. Bei den temporären Installationen sind die Fotografien am Schluss das Bleibende und somit Teil des Gesamtkunstwerks.

Anlässlich des Geburtstags von Wolfgang Volz am 17. Januar 1994 wurde dessen Leica M4 selbst zum Wrapping-Objekt - als ein Geschenk von Christo an „seinen“ hoch geschätzten Fotografen. Bis dahin entstanden mit dieser Kamera etliche Dokumentationen von Christo Projekten.

Die ursprünglich silbern verchromte Leica M4 mit Summicron 35 mm Objektiv hatte Wolfgang Volz einige Zeit vor dem Wrapping farblich in rot/blau umgestaltet - ein Einsatz für das deutsche Nachrichtenmagazin „Der Spiegel" in der New Yorker Bronx war der Anlass dafür. Volz wollte die Aufnahmen für diese Serie möglichst unbeobachtet machen und hatte mit der auffälligen silbern verchromten Kamera zu große Bedenken. Unter der von Christo signierten Einwickelfolie mit der originalen Kordelverschnürung erscheint die rot/blaue Leica M4 eindrucksvoll mystisch und wunderschön. Mit Summicron 1:2/35 Nr. 2275289. Christo + Jeanne Claude - who doesn't know them? The spectacular installations of the now deceased artist couple are world famous. Last but not least, the large-scale projects of the wrapped cultural monuments Arc de Triumphe in Paris or the Reichstag in Berlin caused a worldwide sensation and attracted millions of enthusiastic visitors. The German Leica photographer Wolfgang Volz officially accompanied the Christo + Jeanne Claude projects. In the almost 50-year collaboration, not only the photographic documentations of the projects were created, but photography also became an integral part of them. In the case of temporary installations, the photographs are ultimately what remains and are therefore part of the overall work of art. On the occasion of Wolfgang Volz's birthday on January 17th 1994, his Leica M4 itself became a wrapping object - as a gift from Christo to “his” highly valued photographer. Up until then, a number of documentations of Christo projects had been created with this camera. Some time before the wrapping, Wolfgang Volz had redesigned the originally silver chrome-plated Leica M4 with a Summicron 35 mm lens into red/blue - the reason for this was a job commissioned by the German news magazine "Der Spiegel" in the New York Bronx. Volz wanted to take the photos for this series as unobserved as possible and had too many concerns about the eye-catching silver chrome-plated camera. Through the wrapping foil, signed by Christo, with the original cord fastening, the red/blue Leica M4 appears impressively mystic and beautiful. With Summicron 35 mm f/2 Nr. 2275289.
