Hard boards, original cloth with illustration on the front board [some soiling and wear: see photos]; 6.3/4" x 9.1/2"; blank endpaper, pencil inscription on the front endpaper [see photo]; 287 pages including many b/w illustrations + 12 full-color plates; some soiling and wear [see photos]; the plate at the page 272 has edge wear and creases, good/ very good condition.
"The Marvelous Land of Oz: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman", commonly shortened to "The Land of Oz", published in July 1904, is the second of L. Frank Baum's books set in the Land of Oz, and the sequel to "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1900). This and the next 34 Oz books of the famous 40 were illustrated by John R. Neill.
John Rea Neill (1877-1943) was a magazine and children's book illustrator primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz, including L. Frank Baum's, Ruth Plumly Thompson's, and three of his own. His pen-and-ink drawings have become identified almost exclusively with the Oz series. He did a great deal of magazine and newspaper illustration work which is not as well known today.
