Description
Sebald Beham (c. 1520-1525). Nymphs and Satyrs Entwined in a Vine. ENGRAVED WALLPAPER PIECE. THIS IS A REPRODUCTION FROM THE DURER SOCIETY. ORIGINALS OF THIS double woodcut WOULD HAVE BEEN among the earliest surviving wallpaper examples in existence. Sebald Beham found the model for his satyr in a print by his stylistic mentor, Albrecht Dürer. Although this effusive grapevine design was also issued with a black background, these sheets were printed with only the outline, to allow for hand-coloring. The Durer Society existed for many years from the early 19th century (January 1, 1801 – December 31, 1900). Its purpose was to publicize & enlighten the public on the works of the artist and engraver Albrecht Durer.
